Lithium ion batteries are safe or unsafe!?

Mar. 25, 2021

Lithium ion batteries are safe, but in millions of industrial and consumer applications, failures are inevitable.

Lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in electric vehicles, portable devices, power grid storage, etc., especially in the past decade because of their high specific energy density and stable cycle performance.

However, if not handled properly, chemical energy can be used in a sudden fire or explosion. Accidents related to fire and explosions occur regularly around the world, especially involving mobile phones, laptops, electric cars and aircraft. Some pose serious threats to human life and health and have led manufacturers to recall countless products.

For example, battery fires in Tesla electric cars, battery problems in Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and fires and explosions in Samsung Note 7 have caught the attention of mass media. These events are a constant reminder that safety is a prerequisite for batteries and that serious problems must be addressed before the application of high-energy battery systems in the future.

Large lithium-ion engines such as electric cars may need to be burned because water is ineffective. Copper water could be used, but this might not be available and would be expensive for fire halls. In the event of a lithium battery fire, use only a class D fire extinguisher. Lithium, which is found in the metal, reacts with water, making a fire worse. Use class D fire extinguishers only on lithium fires

What happens if a lithium-ion battery overheats?

If a lithium-ion battery overheats, hisses, or bulges, immediately remove the device from the flammable material and place it on a non-flammable surface. If possible, remove the battery and leave it outside to burn out. You can also leave the device outside for at least six hours.

Small lithium-ion fires can be treated like any other combustible fire. For best results, use a foam extinguisher, carbon dioxide, ABC dry powder, graphite powder, copper powder, or baking soda (sodium carbonate). Halons are also used as fire extinguishing agents.
